Pinot Gris (a.k.a. Pinot Grigio)
Pronunciation: PEE noh Gree(PEE noh GREE jee oh)
Where it's Grown: Most notably the grape is grown in France and Italy. That being said it has found a home in nearly all the wine regions of the world including our own Northern Michigan. In Alsace, France it carries the name Pinot Gris and is a richer bolder style than Italy. Italians call it Pinot Grigio and make it in a lighter, more crisply fruited style. In Oregon it is made in both the richer off-dry style and the dry crisp but weighty version. Right here in Northern Michigan you will find the crisp lemony dry style and the off-dry peach and melon style.
What to expect: Pinot Gris "style" will have a moderate to moderate plus weight and body with stone fruit and melon being dominant over the tart citrus background. This style is also often not completely dry and will have a richer note of honey in the background. The bold rich style is epitomised in Alsace France. This style will work with fish to white meats like pork, boldly flavored dishes and moderately rich textures. Avoid obviously tart/acidic dishes.
Pinot Grigio "style" will have a lemon and green
apple dominated character with the peach or melon
taking a back seat. It should be refreshingly
tart and have a light dried grass aroma. Pair it
with light seafood, vegetables or just have as an
aperitif before dinner.
