Varietal of the week, June 06, 2009

Where it's Grown:This aromatic white wine grape is an Argentine exclusive. Argentina is the only place that this particular grape is grown but it has several different personalities even inside of Argentina. There are several different clones which is why the flavor profile can vary a bit.

The most notable area is in the northwest corner of Argentina in a region called Salta. There are very high elevation vineyards planted in Salta some of which exceed 7000 feet above see level. The most prominent region of Salta for wine production is Cafayate, pronounced Kah-fah-shah-tay. Wines from this area are extremely aromatic and floral with accents of lime added to the traditional stone fruits.

You will find Torrontes planted in Mendoza as well. Here the clone planted makes a big difference as the region is fairly hot. Some of the clones cannot maintain acidity in this warmth and some can which means that some of the resultant wines are bright, crisp and floral. The flip side gives you wines that are rich in apricot and ripe pear but do not have as much rose petal or lime leaf.

The region of La Rioja has plantings as well. The resultant wines have the same mix of results as Mendoza.

What to expect: Torrontes should offer a nose full of rose petal, or honeysuckle, and notes of cilantro. Fruit should quickly follow and be focused on candied lime, pear, apricot and perhaps fruit cocktail. It is a great wine to have with cilantro accented dishes but should avoid peppery heat. It is a great aperitif wine as well.
