Farnese Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

Abruzzo Italy, 2007
Wine of the week, June 13, 2009
Farnese

What to expect: Montepulciano is a red wine grape as well as a town in Tuscany. Often confused for each other they are completely separate concerns. The grape is not even grown in Tuscany, rather it is the grape of Abruzzo and Marches on the Adriatic Coast of Italy. Farnese is a very well respected producer and makes wines of exceptional quality for the price. Expect to find a little raisin, blackberry, black fruit conserve, and an undertone of pepper. Although the wine is quite fruity it also shows more complexity than you would expect at this price. Supporting the fruit are essences of fresh tilled black earth, purple flowers, and a the aroma of a good steak.

est. retail price per bottle: $11
